ATHENA Program
Nominations
are being accepted for the 16th annual ATHENA Award, given to an
outstanding professional woman from the Mahoning Valley on May 22 at
Mr. Anthony's in Boardman. The award, presented by the Regional Chamber
and The Vindicator, honors women for accomplishments in their organizations, leadership in the community and mentoring other women.
In addition, the ATHENA Scholarship will be awarded at the event to a
deserving student attending an area university or college. The ATHENA
Advocate Award will also be presented to an individual or organization
that has provided long-standing support to the ATHENA program.
The deadline for nominations is March 29.
Sponsorships for the dinner and program are available. For more information, contact Helen Paes at (330) 744-2131, ext. 16, or helen@regionalchamber.com.
How ATHENA started…
The inspiration for the ATHENA Award program
originated in Lansing,
Michigan
in 1980, when Martha Mayhood Mertz,
owner of the Mayhood/Mertz Reators, Inc., was asked to serve on the
board of
directors of the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Finding herself the only working woman
serving on the board, she also discovered that in the 75 years of
presenting
community awards, her chamber had only once honored a woman.
Martha Mertz recognized that, “The
world was changing, and
the chamber boardroom did not reflect the reality of the world outside. The time had come bring into focus the many
outstanding professional and businesswomen in our community and to
incorporate
them into leadership positions within the chamber.”
Through this “voice of business,”
they, too, would
participate in guiding the present and shaping the future. The first
ATHENA
Award was presented in 1982. Since that
time, the ATHENA Award has become an international program with
professional
women receiving this recognition all
around the world including Russia,
Canada
and England.
