Private companies invested more than $216 million in the Valley last year, many with the help of regional economic development agencies. According to data compiled by the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber and its economic development partners and published in the 2017 Economic Development Report Card (included in email), a total of 367 projects resulted in $216,256,009 invested, 926 new jobs and another 2,434 retained jobs. In 2016, 164 company projects resulted in nearly $1,137,203,886 of investment and 1,323 new jobs.

The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber recently hosted a group from JobsOhio and TeamNEO, as well as the owners of InSite Consulting, to tour a 53-acre site in CASTLO Industrial Park—the only Valley site that is close to being certified to be marketed as client-ready for future investment and job opportunities, via a program the state launched in 2016.

Last week, the State of Ohio recommended that 15 areas/census tracts in Mahoning and Trumbull counties be considered for federal Opportunity Zones, which could lead to new investment in our community via a program that is designed to drive long-term capital to distressed communities across the country.

After final determination that the Youngstown-Warren region does not meet all of the criteria for Amazon’s proposed second corporate headquarters (HQ2), the Regional Chamber and local leaders are standing behind the decision of its economic development partners TeamNEO and JobsOhio to submit a Cleveland site that did meet all criteria for consideration for the $5 billion project.

The State of Ohio Controlling Board approved at its meeting today a Fast Track Abandoned Gas Station Grant of up to $100,000 to fund the cleanup of an abandoned gas station site on S. State Street in Girard. The former McQuaids station, which has been vacant, boarded and non-operational for several years, was acquired by the Trumbull County Treasurer through foreclosure last year.

Both Trumbull County Commissioners and Braceville Township Trustees approved at their respective meetings this morning and Tuesday evening a 10-year, 60 percent enterprise zone abatement of real estate taxes—as presented by the Trumbull County Planning Commission—for a nearly $3 million expansion project at Venture Plastics, located at 4000 Warren-Ravenna Road.

The Regional Chamber and City of Niles have launched an aggressive property redevelopment program using a recently completed Youngstown State University study.
The study, spearheaded by volunteers from The Avenue & Main community group and completed by YSU’s Regional Economic Development Initiative, identified abandoned and tax-delinquent properties throughout the city. The Regional Chamber’s Economic Development team and city leaders are now engaged in positioning those parcels for future economic growth.
