Richard Cordray is a lifelong Ohioan, born and raised in Grove City. Over the last five years, Cordray served as the first-ever director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a position he was appointed to by President Obama, where he led an agency that was launched in the aftermath of the nation’s financial crisis.
This Ohio governor’s race has added national significance in that it could have a profound impact on redrawing Congressional districts for the next 10 years.
Cordray previously served as Attorney General, an office to which he was appointed after the resignation of Marc Dann. While attorney general, Ohio recovered more than $2 billion for public teachers and retirees who were victims of fraud.
Prior to serving as Attorney General, Cordray served as the Ohio Treasurer, where he spearheaded financial literacy programs.
Cordray also served as an Ohio State Representative and as Ohio’s first ever Solicitor General. In that role he represented the State of Ohio before the U.S. Supreme Court.
After graduating from the University of Chicago Law School, where he served as Editor of the Law Review, Cordray clerked for two U.S. Supreme Court Justices: Byron White and Anthony Kennedy. He received his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University and was awarded a Master’s degree from Oxford University on a Marshall Scholarship from the British government.
Cordray lives in Grove City, Ohio with his wife, Peggy, and their two children.
