D.C. Fly-In - June 20-21, 2018

US Capital

Be a part of the Valley’s inaugural D.C. Fly-In to promote an exchange of ideas between federal officials and our Valley’s leaders to ensure that our voice is loud and clear in the nation’s capital.

The trip will feature meetings and discussions with White House advisors, senior officials from cabinet-level departments, Congressional members and their staffs, as well as valuable networking opportunities — all designed for Valley leaders to advance important issues that impact economic development and quality of life in Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

Fly-In Meetings Announced

The Mahoning Valley’s inaugural D.C. Fly-in will include an opportunity to meet with Mr. Matthew P. Donovan, the undersecretary of the Air Force responsible for overseeing a $132 billion annual budget.

Meetings with members of the Ohio Congressional delegation, including Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Marietta, Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Howland, Rep. Dave Joyce, R-Bainbridge, Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-OH, and Sen. Rob Portman, R-OH, are scheduled.  The Fly-In participants also will meet with White House officials, including Ja’Ron Smith, special assistant to the President for Domestic Policy.

“This represents an incredible opportunity for our community to support the Youngstown Air Reserve Station,” said Eastern Ohio Military Affairs Director Vito Abruzzino. “We are very fortunate that Undersecretary Donovan has agreed to carve out time for us.”

The Regional Chamber is organizing the Fly-in to help the Valley better compete with the three Cs—Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati—and other metropolitan areas that have been engaged with these kinds of capital days for years. One of the fly-in priorities will be pursuing opportunities to protect and possibly expand operations at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station, which currently pumps nearly $100 million per year into the local economy.

Donovan is responsible for organizing, training, equipping and providing for the welfare of approximately 670,000 active duty, Guard, Reserve and civilian Airmen and their families, worldwide, including those at YARS. He directs strategy and policy development, risk management, weapons acquisition, technology investments and human resource management across a global enterprise. As the undersecretary, he is responsible for implementing decisions of the President and Congress, and fulfilling combatant commanders’ current and future operational requirements.

Two other priority issues will be expanding operations, including the potential missile defense site at Camp Ravenna, and revitalizing the Mahoning River.

“Our delegation to Congress has been extremely valuable promoting the Mahoning Valley,” said Regional Chamber Vice President of Government Affairs Guy Coviello. “Now we have an opportunity to not only amplify their chorus, but take it directly to the White House.”

In between the policy meetings with the federal officials, participants will have a dinner with keynote speaker Rick Ungar and a luncheon with keynote speaker Hugh Hewitt. Ungar is the co-host of the Steele & Ungar Show, with two million listeners per week on the SiriusXM POTUS channel. Hewitt has two million listeners per day on the nationally syndicated Hugh Hewitt Show. Both are Valley natives.
