Position:
Development Intern – Leadership Mahoning Valley and the Center for Nonprofit Excellence
Position Description:
Through this internship, the student will receive the opportunity to learn and assist with all aspects of re-vamping and re-starting the Leadership Mahoning Valley Program as well as to assist with developing the new Center for Nonprofit Excellence. He/She will participate in extensive research related to both programs, grant writing, event/session planning, budget development, volunteer/board management, and developing overall timelines and marketing plans for both programs. The student will receive hands-on, “real world” work experience and will have the opportunity to network and develop relationships with business and community leaders.
Duties/Responsibilities:
The intern may assist with the following:
• Research similar programs throughout the region and across the country and make recommendations for local programming.
• Assisting with planning, organizing, publicizing and implementing plans for the two new programs, meeting and event planning.
• Work with local businesses to secure sponsorships for the new programming.
• Conduct research for new program development, curriculum development and work collaboratively with community partners.
• Prepare and organize mailings, manage spreadsheets and enter information into fundraising database.
• Assist with grant research and proposal preparation.
• Assist with donor and LMV Alumni relations and volunteer engagement strategies.
• Assist with developing fundraising-related promotional materials and publicity including writing press releases and developing a marketing/social media calendar and timelines.
Qualifications and Desired Skills:
• Junior or Senior Marketing, Advertising/PR, or Communications major with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Graduate students and students from other majors may also be considered based on interest and experience. Students should have knowledge of the Mahoning Valley.
• Excellent computer skills are a must with proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Must be able to interact with the public at all levels, clearly communicate orally and in writing and have a professional phone manner.
• Applicants should be creative, hard-working, responsible, organized, motivated, detail-oriented and be able to follow directions and complete assigned tasks on time.
• Must be able to work independently with little supervision.

Hours Per Week:
Must be available to work a minimum of 15 – 20 hours per week. The schedule includes primarily weekday hours; however, occasional evening and weekend hours may be required for specific events.
Hourly Wage:
• Interns will be paid an hourly rate plus gain valuable experience.
• Department-specific internship requirements will be honored.
• Term of internship will be for a minimum of one semester. Based upon business needs an extension of up to one year may be granted.

About Us:
Housed within the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber, Leadership Mahoning Valley is a non-profit organization that was created in 1984 to identify individuals with diverse backgrounds and experience who demonstrate leadership talent and community commitment. The mission of Leadership Mahoning Valley is to identify, educate and motivate community leaders to address challenges facing the Mahoning Valley. Governed by a volunteer board, Leadership Mahoning Valley is one of more than 500 community leadership programs in the United States. Annually from 1984 thru 2019, a class made up of approximately 30 participants is selected to complete a 9-month program consisting of monthly sessions focusing on topics such as education, health and human services, diversity, government, justice, labor, business, the media and quality of life. Graduates become part of the prestigious LMV Alumni Association consisting of more than 1200 business and community leaders who have completed the program.
The new Center for Nonprofit Excellence will provide professional development opportunities and resources to area non-profit organizations. The purpose of the Center is to help to strengthen area non-profit organizations so that they can deliver greater impact to the individuals they serve and thus to our community as a whole.
