Professor & Acting Dean of Bitonte College at YSU Named 2019 Athena Award Recipient

Among a crowd of nearly 400 at Mr. Anthony's last night, Dr. Tammy King, acting dean of the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services at Youngstown State University, was named the recipient of the 2019 ATHENA Award, presented by the Regional Chamber and The Vindicator/Vindy.com.

The ATHENA Award is given annually to recognize area business and professional women who have demonstrated excellence in their chosen career, provided leadership in the community and mentored or contributed to the growth of other professional women.

In her role as acting dean, Dr. King has been working with the Youngstown Foundation to secure funding for scholarships and is also working on a strategic plan for the college that focuses on the needs of the community and students.

Prior to becoming acting dean, Dr. King had been associate dean of the College and chair of the Department of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences. (See more about Dr. King on page 2.)

Valley native Elizabeth McIntyre, publisher and editor of Crain’s Cleveland Business, keynoted the 27th annual ATHENA Award event, and 15 nominees were honored. In addition, the 12th ATHENA Scholarship—a $1,500, one-time award created in partnership with the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley—was presented to Galena Lopuchovsky, a Poland High School senior who will be studying biochemistry through the Baccmed program at Youngstown State University this fall.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield also presented for the seventh year two additional scholarships in the amount of $1,250 each to Springfield High School senior Taylor Barber and Struthers High School senior Sabrina Bartholomew. Both will continue their education at YSU, as well.

The Athena Award Dinner was sponsored by Huntington Bank, with additional support from Anthem, Home Savings, Kropp Photography, Mercy Health, Lee & Bonnie Burdman and Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC.
